The recent Atlas Brew discussed a highly debated and substantial Proposal Improvement Proposal (PIP) aimed at expanding the Star Atlas Intellectual Property (IP). The overarching strategy is centered on transforming Star Atlas into a vast, connected transmedia universe, with the explicit goal of elevating the IP to become the “next big sci-fi IP” comparable to Star Trek or Star Wars, thereby making it a cultural phenomenon. The primary objective of this initiative is not to generate direct revenue from book sales, nor to guarantee a specific number of new players, but rather to “blow up the world” and significantly increase the overall value and profile of the IP by acquiring maximum “eyeballs” and “earballs” (attention). This attention is crucial for engaging with Hollywood, which prioritizes existing IP and audience traction over direct book sales for greenlighting projects. A specific target is to build a substantial subscriber list, with a bold goal of 200,000 subscribers, as this is considered a potent asset for the IP and for industry pitches.
Sterling and Stone, the proponents of this PIP, will create a foundational layer of IP by elaborating on the extensive lore already developed by N (Michael Wagner) and Danny. The content strategy includes releasing four premium novels annually on a quarterly basis, supplemented by consistent novella releases, a schedule designed to maintain algorithmic relevance on platforms like Amazon and ensure continuous visibility for Star Atlas. Marketing efforts will focus on maximizing readership and reviews, often by offering books as free downloads, a proven strategy for generating traction that can attract interest from the entertainment industry, even if direct sales are low. The existing Star Atlas community is viewed as a significant advantage, capable of driving positive reviews and boosting algorithmic performance. A critical component of the expansion is the creation of an adaptation package, including screenplays and series bibles, which Sean of Sterling and Stone will personally use to pitch the Star Atlas universe directly to entertainment industry decision-makers, aiming to fast-track its exposure to those capable of making “billion-dollar decisions”. The strategy also anticipates leveraging the Star Atlas IP on future AI-powered content creation platforms like Showrunner, where derivative shows could generate royalties and further expand the universe’s reach.
Throughout this process, Automa will retain final authority on all lore questions, with N providing lore transfer and Danny approving storylines to safeguard the integrity and continuity of the Star Atlas canon. The lore has been intentionally structured to allow for future community co-creation once the core IP is firmly established. The expected benefits include an increase in Daily Active Users (DAU) across all Star Atlas gaming products (UE5, Hollow Sim, SAGE) as new users are drawn in by the expanded IP. It is anticipated that the Star Atlas IP could grow exponentially larger than the game itself, benefiting all IP-related Star Atlas businesses, including merchandise. While the PIP involves a substantial investment of approximately $600,000 over a year, proponents argue that this level of commitment is necessary to execute the strategy effectively and avoid diluted results, emphasizing that “anything worth doing is worth doing right”. Sterling and Stone acknowledge their significant investment in time, resources, and opportunity cost, highlighting that their proposal is a unique, “bespoke” partnership driven by their belief in the universe’s immense potential.
